Cr\u00e9dito: EcoCiencia.<\/div><\/div>\n<p>En febrero de 2020, ocurri\u00f3 un fen\u00f3meno misterioso: el colapso y desaparici\u00f3n de la cascada m\u00e1s grande del Ecuador, la <strong>cascada San Rafael <\/strong>en el r\u00edo Coca (ver foto en el Anexo). La abrupta eliminaci\u00f3n de esta barrera natural en el r\u00edo desat\u00f3 un proceso de <strong>erosi\u00f3n regresiva<\/strong><sup>1 <\/sup>de una magnitud y proporci\u00f3n tan excepcional que se form\u00f3 un nuevo ca\u00f1\u00f3n (ver <strong>Figura 1<\/strong>), y se ha cambiado completamente el curso del r\u00edo y sus afluentes, eliminando estructura e infraestructura alrededor, y socavando el tramo del r\u00edo aguas abajo con una inmensa cantidad de sedimentos.<\/p>\n<p>En esta manera, el <strong>r\u00edo Coca<\/strong> est\u00e1 retomando su paleo cauce y sus condiciones hist\u00f3ricas, antes que los flujos de lava que erupcionaron del volc\u00e1n Reventador represaron el r\u00edo con el monstruoso dique que form\u00f3 la cascada de San Rafael.<\/p>\n<p>En t\u00e9rminos de <strong>costo social<\/strong>, este proceso ha llevado varias partes de los tres oleoductos, un tramo de la carretera, puentes, casas y estructuras, y todo lo dem\u00e1s dentro de su alcance. Mientras tanto, la erosi\u00f3n regresiva siga activa y a\u00fan est\u00e1 avanzando aguas arriba.<\/p>\n<p>La obra de captaci\u00f3n de la <strong>hidroel\u00e9ctrica Coca Codo Sinclair<\/strong> que produce hasta 30% de la energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica en Ecuador, est\u00e1 solo 15.5 kil\u00f3metros r\u00edo arriba de la cascada San Rafael (ver <strong>Mapa Base<\/strong>), y est\u00e1 en riesgo de ser afectada por la propagaci\u00f3n de la erosi\u00f3n regresiva en el r\u00edo Coca. Datos: Ecociencia.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"fitem-sep\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Transici\u00f3n de los bosques a zonas erosionadas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Se cuantific\u00f3 la p\u00e9rdida de cobertura forestal en este tramo del r\u00edo Coca aguas abajo de la represa hidroel\u00e9ctrica Coca Codo Sinclair desde el a\u00f1o 2020, el comienzo del fen\u00f3meno de erosi\u00f3n regresiva.<\/p>\n<p>Encontramos la p\u00e9rdida de <strong>508<\/strong> <strong>hect\u00e1reas <\/strong>de bosque nativo en s\u00f3lo los 3,5 a\u00f1os entre junio de 2020 y enero de 2024 (<strong>Figura 2<\/strong>).
